The Estevan U18 Viragos started their spring football season this weekend with a loss against the Moosomin Generals.

The girls' team lost the game 54-6, with the one touchdown being scored by their quarterback.

After the game in Moosomin, the team is coming back for another game in Estevan this weekend.

The defensive coordinator for the team, Kevin Mortenson, says the team had a few good plays over the weekend.'

"Yesterday, Sunday, we lost our first game as part of a home and home we went to Moosomin. We were defeated 54-6, our sole touchdown was scored by our quarterback," said Mortenson. "She must have run it for close to 80 yards, so that's very impressive. The whole team outing was very impressive."

The team has been doing out-of-equipment conditioning over the past month, and practicing with equipment started the week before the game.

"Some of these girls have only been in the helmet and shoulder pads for a week. We've been conditioning for well over a month. Some of these girls, this is their first time playing football," said Mortenson, "We've only had three practices but there wasn't a lot of nervousness out there and I thought they had a real good game."

Conditioning drills players on the aspects of playing they need the most - including running, tackling, and throwing.

"We wanted to try something new this year when it comes to conditioning," said Mortenson, "It's kind of a team bonding, team building, I don't want to call it an experiment but it's a situation where they're all together and they're relaxed. I think it's going to work and keep working - hopefully we can do it with the other teams."

Mortenson says they've got some work to do if they're going to take on Moosomin again.

"After we got to the dressing room, we let the game wear off. We're going to be working on tackling and ball carrier approach quite a bit this week," said Mortenson, "I'm not gonna dwell on the negatives, there were plenty of positives out there."

Both the U18 boys and girls football teams next play on Saturday, June 26th.  The boys play at 2 P.M., and the girls play at 5.
