While a draft is a big event in any sport, hockey and football get particular attention and publicity, and one can't deny that some hometown pride rests on the names from Estevan now in professional sport.

However, lacrosse is seeing growing involvement in Estevan, and some young members are even striving to take it to the next level. This includes Kaden Chrest of the Bantam Voltz, who was selected as second overall in the first ever Bantam lacrosse 'draft' over the weekend. That said, it wasn't your ordinary draft...it only involves one team - the Junior A Saskatchewan Swat - and has a specific purpose.

"Over the course of the lacrosse season, the Swat has identified 25 kids that were born in '04, the bantam age, to work with and develop for their program going forward. Their goal is to have these kids, in 3-4 years, join at the Junior A level. It's new for the program, and it's new for Saskatchewan. It's the first time they've done a draft," explained Blaine Chrest, the Manager of the Bantam Voltz and proud father to Kaden.

The chosen kids will take part in development camps and activities with the Swat throughout their offseasons, until they're ready to put on the team's jersey. A team of top ten will be picked from the 25.

"He's put a lot of hard work in it. He really likes the game, and we've got our eyes open to a lot of opportunities this year," said Chrest, noting that they are examining options for schooling tied with the sport.

Chrest had 16 goals and 5 assists for 21 points in the past season, and a provincial B side gold medal.
