One can still smell the aroma of freshly cut wood, as they approach the memorial to the 21 lives that were lost in the plane crash of 1946.

While the monument will not be officially unveiled until Sunday, during the airshow, it is in full view of the public.

Just drive down Kensington Avenue, and it is in the yard of Baxter's Transport. It's a large wooden display with an Avro Lancaster featured on top. The 21 faces of the men who died are carved in detail as well.

The revealing ceremony on Sunday will include the attendance of the Wing Commander of the Moose Jaw Air Force Base, and a missing man formation flyover.

In 1946, a Douglas DC-3 Dakota, also known by it's wartime designation as the C-47 Skytrain, crashed at the Estevan airport, which was then located south of town. 20 RCAF airmen, all decorated veterans of World War 2, and a ground crew member lost their lives in the inferno that followed. The event was largely forgotten in the history books, until recent local efforts resulted in the memorial initiative.
