Death, taxes and unpredictable weather in January on the prairies are three guarantees in life.

The latest blanket of cold air warranted an extreme cold warning which was placed in effect during the early hours of Friday morning in Estevan. The temperature hit minus thirty five and was accompanied by a wind chill of minus forty five. As the weekend approaches, the seesaw battle of temperatures is expected to continue according to Brad Vrolijk with Environment Canada. 

"Heading into Friday night, lows will drop to below minus thirty with extreme wind chills of minus forty showing up again," Vrolijk shared.

"At these wind chill levels it only takes a couple minutes or less for exposed skin to freeze. If you do have to be outside its important to cover as much as you can, dress in layers, gloves, toques, scarves, jackets to make sure you can protect yourself from the wind and the cold as much as possible."

Estevan and south east Saskatchewan will see some temporary relief in the coming days, but temperatures will continue to climb up and down in the foreseeable future.

"It looks like this weekend a low pressure system will bring some relief with daytime highs climbing to the minus ten to fifteen range but it looks like early next week another arctic high comes crashing in, sending temperatures to where they are now. By mid to late next week, it looks like a more prolonged warm up is on the way with temperatures maybe reaching the minus five to zero degree mark," Vrolijk concluded.
