One of Estevan's educators is heading to Toronto to receive an award.

Principle Amber Hilstrom of Sacred Heart school was recently awarded with The Learning Partnerships Outstanding Principles of 2019.

There are 30 principles chosen from all over Canada, and the Partnership recognizes principles who demonstrate innovation, have an entrepreneurial spirit and are creative in finding solutions and opportunities in their schools and communities.

The principles are chosen by a national committee on the basis of their exceptional contributions that positively impact students achievement and success. We got in contact with Amber to ask her how it felt to win such an award.

"Well it was quite a shock to me at first i could definitely not have received this award without my staffs help they do a lot to support me and everything we do at this school, but i am certainly humbled and honored to be recognized."

The recipients of this award are taken to Toronto where an awards ceremony takes place along with the ceremony the recipients are also provided with extra training in proven management skills and leadership techniques that foster excellence in schools.

Amber may be the winner but she couldn't have done it without all the amazing people who support her. Amber Hilstrom.

"My staff, Christa Walten was the one who initiated the application for this, my director, Gwen Keith, there were a couple students that submitted letters so Kennedy Young in grade 8 my SCC chair wrote a letter and the students they just make coming to work each day amazing so to them I'm grateful if it weren't for the students at the school i wouldn't be where i am today."

The 2019 honourees will join the ranks of the National Academy of Canada's Outstanding Principals, which now boasts more than 500 members.

Canadas Outstanding Principals award gala takes place February 26th at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon in Toronto.

UPDATE:

Amber Hilstrom has recently returned from Toronto after receiving her award and attending an executive leadership program in Toronto from the Rotsmans School of Management. Hilstrom.

"It was a five day pretty intensive course, just learning about leadership skills and deep learning. We were fortunate enough to sit with that group of 30 people as well as some other executives members that have won the award in the past. The collaboration within that to bring back new ideas to the school was definitely invaluable information that I can put forward into what we're doing now in the school in order to help our students grow."
