While Saskatchewan residents have until Friday to complete a government-issued survey on cannabis legalization, the Alberta government has announced some plans for age restrictions.

It looks as though Alberta would use 18 as the minimum age for marijuana use - which is also their minimum age for buying tobacco and consuming alcohol.

Alberta Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley said a minimum age of 18 should deter people from buying weed from illegal sources instead of going to a legal distributor.

There's no word yet on whether marijuana would be distributed by public or private businesses.

Saskatchewan residents over the age of 18 were asked to fill out the survey regarding items such as where marijuana should be sold, whether municipalities should be able to produce bylaws to more-strictly regulate use, growing cannabis, workplace safety, impaired driving, and more.

The federal government announced plans this past spring to legalize recreational marijuana on July 1.
