The forest fires in BC are doing more than affecting southeast Saskatchewan with smoke, they are also driving up the price of lumber.

"Everything's skyrocketing," explained Garnet Ripplinger, from Wood Country Building Services. "That' s the market in general."

"Things have gone up substantially due to that from what I understand, there's a number of mills that have been closed and if they aren't closed, they can't get a truck in and out. So it does cause some problems."

He adds that even if the forest fires were under control right now, the recovery time will still take a long time before before prices will go back to normal.

"It could be next spring by the time this all clears up, you never know. Till they get production going back again. These mills are all over BC and Alberta, some items are out of one, and not in another and yet they all have to maintain the raw materials. It creates a considerable amount of havoc."

"That's all providing these mills don't burn up too."

However, not everything has been increased in price.

"Most of the treated lumber has not jumped very much. Usually that is bought and paid for in the spring by lumber yards, that's what we do. That has been fairly stable."

"Your sheet goods like plywood, regular 2x4s, 2x8s, 2x10s, construction material that is on an ongoing basis, that's the things that are affected by the market more so."
