This weekend may be a good time to curl up by the fire with a book, as the weather, or at least the temperatures, are set to be frightful. However, if one must head out, it'll be important to be prepared for anything, as the windchills will be dangerous.

"Be dressed for the weather. You may not need to put all those clothes on when you're in the car, but it's best to have them available should you break down," advised Constable Daniel Gaignard with the Estevan RCMP, "Have yourself a survival kit in the car with things like blankets, sleeping bags, flashlights, extra battery power for your phone. Everything that could possibly go wrong, you should prepare for."

He added that getting stranded in the winter can get quite risky, especially in -50 weather. The emergency kit should also include a collapsible shovel, and electronic road flares and traffic cones so you can be seen. Including a flashlight in your kit may mean that the set will have to be kept warm in your home and then a part of the items you grab when on your way out the door.

Gaignard also recommended that you leave an itinerary so your loved ones know where to find you if something goes awry.
