Souris-Moose Mountain MP Dr Robert Kitchen was in Bienfait yesterday hosting a town hall meeting to hear concerns regarding the future of coal energy in the area.

"I believe it was very well received," shared Bienfait's mayor, Paul Carroll. "I was very encouraged by the amount of people who came out and had a chance to voice some of their concerns and their observations of the current environment that we have from our federal government we have based on coal power production."

"Everybody is in a state of flux, I think because of the uncertainty of our federal government and the whimsical approach that they've taken currently in changing the timelines for phasing out coal production that was already established previously at the Paris Accord."

He added that many of those in attendance had good ideas for Dr Kitchen on how to move forward.

"We're very fortunate that he came. He listened and made some very extensive notes and he'll take those notes back to Ottawa. I think that's important to do that. The other thing that I noticed was that we sent the message that we need to educate our friends and neighbours, people in the next provinces about the benefits of coal power production and what base power really consists of."
