UPDATE:Leak Has Been Found And Stopped

by Matt Cinnamon

The Estevan Fire Department and SaskEnergy have successfully stopped the leak, and the area is safe for the evacuated residents to return to their homes.

Fire Chief Dale Feser explains what happened.

"At 5:59 a natural gas leak was identified, and SaskEnergy and the Estevan Fire Department was notified. When crews arrived, they noticed a heavy gas smell, and the leak was large enough to be heard at that time."

According to Feser, a little bit of assesment revealed a break in the gas line before the meter coming from the underground service.

"While we were waiting for SaskEnergy to arrive, we tried to shut down the valve, but we were unsuccessful due to the nature of the leak."

After further assessment, the First Responders and SaskEnergy made the decision to evacuate the south side of the 300 block of 4th street, as well as the north side of the 300 block of 3rd street as a precautionary measure.

"There were approximately 8 homes that were affected by the evacuation, and everybody found a place to stay in the meantime."

"The leak has now been stopped by SaskEnergy, and it is now safe for the homeowners to return to their homes. There is no further risk to public safety," he concluded.

They thank everyone for their cooperation and assistance in the matter.
