The August Long Weekend was a busy one for officers with the Canada Border Service Agency.

"CBSA officers in Southern Saskatchewan processed approximately 9,800 travellers over the long weekend," explained Luke Reimer, a communications officer with the CBSA. "That represents a very slight decrease, about 3% from 2016 when officers processed approximately 10,100 travellers."

"The busiest border crossing was North Portal with 4,800 travellers coming through and the busiest day was Monday. There were also approximately 700 travellers who entered Canada at Estevan Highway."

"There were no significant border wait times reported."

He adds that long weekends are typically their busiest times of the year and they remind travellers to try and time their crossing so they miss the peak crossing time.

"We'll often have our peak travel times on the Monday following the long weekend in the afternoon and evening. Consider crossing in the morning, to use our high volume crossings like North Portal which can handle large volumes of traffic and to have your receipts and your travel documents ready."

Despite being a busy time, officers only reported only one significant enforcement action.

"At Estevan Highway on Saturday, officers seized an undeclared stun gun which is considered a prohibited weapon from a Minnesota woman. She paid a $500 penalty for failing to declare."

Reimer adds that officers are there to help process Canadians and serve Canadians while watching for contraband such as prohibited weapons.

"It's really that dual role of serving Canadians and welcoming Canadians home and also being on the lookout for things that could be dangerous in our country such as prohibited weapons. Our officers are always there, always ready to welcome Canadians home and to welcome visitors to our country while screening for dangerous people and goods."
