At yesterday's City Council meeting, it was announced that the contract for waste and recycling collection would go to Green For Life Environmental.

"We weighed all three of them very carefully," shared Mayor Roy Ludwig. "The one came up wanting but it came down to the two, Goliath and GFL. And GFL won out and we're happy to say that GFL will be the provider of choice for the next three years."

Green For Life recently bought Regens Disposal last fall.

"Local was a small part I believe, in that decision making. It's a points system, there are many other factors that came into it. It wouldn't have been on local alone. It was also price and a lot of the other factors that came into it."

Despite some contentious contract negotiations in the past, these discussions ran rather smooth.

"I think in large part, we had the transition from manual to mechanized pickup. There was a lot of animosity. But now we've travelled this far down the road, people realize with the mechanized system, it's cleaner. In the past, I remember litter being strewn up and down the back alleys. The dogs, the cats, they would get in, it was just a horrific mess. And then with the winds we had, it only compounded the issue."

"Now everything is mechanized. The lids, for the most part, stay down and I think our city is a lot cleaner as a result. And you don't have back injuries or compensation issues."

As for the contract itself, Ludwig added that it's pretty much status quo.

"We'll see a reduction in price because of the competitive tendering which is a bonus."
