City Council gave first reading on Monday to a new zoning bylaw in relation to where the new cannabis retail outlet will be allowed to go.

"It's 4th Street from 13th to Kensington," explained Mayor Roy Ludwig, "and then Kensington from 4th to King. And then it's King Street from Kensington to Souris and then Souris from King to 4th."

"Any storefront on those streets on those streets would be fine. The police want access to be able to see people going in and out."

He added that any application would also have to fall within already established guidelines that have already been put into place.

"It has to be at least 200 meters from any school or playground."

"Any application, we'll have to look at it own's merits. But we'll probably go with the recommendations of our Land Development Officer, Richard Neufeld. But I would think it would probably be either a takeover of an existing business or one of the vacant buildings."

This was only the first reading of the bylaw so feedback from residents is welcome.

"We're looking forward to people giving us feedback and getting back to us before second and third reading and then we'll take those concerns into consideration."
