It's a charming, previously unnamed road, winding past Cactus Park, through the foot of the Estevan valley overlooking Boundary Dam power station. You have already driven on it, on your way to the ball diamonds or a summertime cruise with friends and now it has a new name to honour one of Estevan's esteemed locals; Russ Brown.

Earlier this year the City of Estevan announced their plans to rename this particular street, Brown Street, to honour the late local businessman, former MLA, and community-minded citizen Russ Brown. Brown passed away in 1971 at the age of 51 after a lifetime of service to family, friends, and community. His legacy was evident this afternoon at the unveiling of Brown Street where four of Brown's six children were present to witness the grand unveiling, along with their families several community members.

Debbie Packet, one of Brown's daughters, told us "We moved down to Estevan when my dad purchased the Empire hotel. Soon after that he ran for MLA and was defeated and then in the next provincial election he won, then he was elected to the city council that same year. After he sold the hotel, he and my Mom bought a jewellery store in downtown Estevan. He was also involved in the Elks and the Legion, he felt it was his duty to serve in the community he lived in, and that is why he was involved in civic politics and provincial politics."

"We would like to thank the City of Estevan for honouring dad in that way," Packet explained. "It meant a lot to all of us."

She adds that her father would have been very humbled by the honour.

Brown Street is located off of Collins Road, starting at Cactus Park.
