As the city prepares to move on from a snowy winter season in Estevan, decisions are beginning to be made on upcoming capital projects to be completed in 2017.

City Council gathered for their bi-monthly meeting on Monday night with one notable item on the agenda gaining unanimous approval from the members.

Glen Peterson Construction Ltd. has been awarded the tender for the first phase of the King Street Rehabilitation project that will begin in late May. The work will include the widening of King Street between Bannatyne Avenue and Pine Avenue from three lanes to four lanes, as well as asphalt resurfacing.

"King Street is our last main thoroughfares that is in drastic need of repair," explained Mayor Roy Ludwig following Monday's meeting. "So we're very happy to be getting the first part of that repair done this year."

The key improvement to be made is widening the roadway to four lanes, as traffic typically stalls travelling east when a vehicle is attempting to turn north on Bannatyne.

"We've been in a bottleneck in that area for, well, many years," adds Mayor Ludwig. "And this will take that bottleneck away and provide two lanes in each direction, which will be great."

The Rehabilitation Work Runs From Pine Avenue To Bannatyne Avenue.

The following improvements will be made as per the tender agreement:

  • King Street and Bannatyne Avenue intersection improvements
  • Roadway rehabilitation between Bannatyne and Pine, including construction of a four-lane roadway
  • King Street and Pine Avenue intersection improvement

The city's engineering department will make arrangements with SaskPower to relocate three street lights located on the north side of the roadway. They will also make arrangements with Can-Traffic to relocate one traffic signal light and upgrade the wiring and conduit for lighting upgrades.

City staff will also relocate pertinent city utilities as required, which is not included in the tender. The city has estimated between $125,000 - $175,000 as a provisional allowance for utility relocation.

All pre-construction arrangements must be completed before the construction start-date of May 23, 2017.

Pending weather conditions, the construction period will last from May 23 - June 30, 2017.
