Hunters in Saskatchewan are being warned about the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease after a bull elk shot south of Melfort is the latest to come back positive for CWD, a fatal nervous system disease that affects all members of the deer family.

45 of Saskatchewan's 83 wildlife management zones have had confirmed cases of CWD, with 34 cases being identified within the province this year already.

All hunters are encouraged to submit heads from deer, elk, moose, and caribou to the Ministry of Environment for free testing. The disease is not detected in humans, but consuming meat from an animal known to have the disease can be dangerous.
