The year of 2016 could aptly be described as a roller-coaster ride. From large scale, high publicity events, to tragic deaths, residents of the southeast corner of Saskatchewan experienced joy and sorrow.

Members of the City of Estevan pitched in and helped in the good times and bad, and EMO Coordinator Helen Fornwald played a key role in making sure everyone stayed safe while working and playing. She shared about some of the challenges her and her team faced during the floods of June and July.

"(A major one was) certainly dealing with the overwhelming amount of rain in our drainage system, and the extended power outage that came with that severe storm, as well as all the fallen trees blocking streets throughout the city."

While recovery was definately a priority, being proactive and making sure there is plans available if such a thing happens again is also important.

"We are in the middle of developing current mutual aid agreement plans with our surrounding towns, RM's, and villages. These are to assist each other in the event of a disaster. We are also trying to use Estevan as a southeast training location for emergency preparedness."

She adds that they are also monitering the snow conditions and preparing for spring.

Among the busiest times of the year that Fornwald mentioned were the Summer Games and Snowbirds airshow, their related emergency plans, and a train derailment in the center of town.
