Estevan's City Councillors' week started with a busy 4 days in Regina at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention, and was the second time attending for Shelly Veroba.

"It was very informative. I found this one was great from the start to finish. It was really packed with information, we had a lot of speakers come to it, and they had a really great inspirational speaker too," she shared.

Veroba made a point of taking in the talks around the upcoming legalization of marijuana, as well as items relating to current crime trends and prevention.

"I learnt that, with legalization of cannabis, they're still struggling right now to figure it all out. July 1st is still the target date, but there's rumblings as to whether or not they'll be ready to go."

She added that it sounds like the laws surrounding the substance will be in a similar vein to liquor, and she hopes that minimum age will be set at at least 18 or 19.

In their different activities throughout the week, the councillors were able to interact with peers from a variety of centers, both large and small.

"The common denomenater out there in Saskatchewan is our lack of doctors in smaller communities. A lot of times in Estevan right now, we feel like we're unique with our doctor situation in the crisis shortage that we do have at the moment, however, it's a struggle for every single community out there to get doctors. We were hearing from people that there was a 4 week just to be able to see a doctor. It made us realize that in Estevan here, with the inititiaves we're doing at the hospital, they're a positive thing," Veroba said, adding that she hopes other communities can learn from Estevan as well.
