The Estevan Police Service has had to deal with a number of accidental 911 calls where the caller hung up before contact could be made. Here's what you should know if you accidentally dial 911.

"Just stay on the line," explained Sgt Evan Handley. "Don't hang up because if you hang up, 911 is going to call us to try and locate you."

"Stay on the line, tell them it's not an emergency. They still might transfer you to the local police department but we're just going to make sure you're okay. We might pop by just to make sure there's nothing wrong. But when you hang up, we have to come check to see what's going on."

He added that unless calling 911 becomes a common occurrence, you're not going to get into any trouble.

"If it's a one time, or even a once every six months or every two years, it's not a big deal. It happens. When it happens over, and over, and over again, that's when you can get into trouble."

"Don't be embarrassed, it happens lots. We go to tons of 911 hang up calls, especially with kids. Just stay on the line and tell the 911 operator what happened, either it was an accidental mistake or your young one was playing with the phone."
