The outpouring of support for the Humboldt Broncos after their tragic bus accident continues to flow from both young and old in the southeast.

There's no better place to look for an example of this than the students at the ECS, who have themselves stepped up in a big way.

"The senior girls basketball team has fundraised by selling green ribbons for two dollars a piece, and accepting donations. So far, we have raised $1,474.50. We sold them during school hours and also at our team fundraiser at Mr. Mikes on Tuesday night. We also collected about $200 in donations for the Broncos," shared Jessie Smoliak with the ECS.

"The idea came from our principal, Pat Jeannot, because his son (Tanner) plays for the Moose Jaw Warriors. The parents actually came together on Saturday and were making these ribbons, so Pat asked me if the senior girls basketball team would sell these on Monday. Of course, no questions asked, we did it."

She added that as long as people are interested in purchasing and donating, the ribbons will continue to be made and sold.

Students also showed their support in other ways. Monday was Green Day, where everyone in attendance wore some form of green in a show of solidarity. On Wednesday, they participated in the nation wide Jersey Day.

"Everybody was wearing a jersey. I don't think I spotted one kid not wearing a jersey, or a t-shirt with logo or name on it to be supporting along with the green ribbons. Even just wearing green, if they didn't own a jersey. That means a lot," Smoliak noted.

As one of the basketball coaches at the ECS, she knows first hand about travelling on team buses, the atmosphere and the memories made. The incident has struck her personally.

"It is actually my worst fear as a coach. For this to actually happen, it has hit home. Immediately my girls were texting each other and just saying how much we appreciate and how much we love each other, because we are a family."

"As a community member, as a teacher and as a coach, it is so nice to see everybody get on board and be supportive with this tragedy that's happened," she said.
