While the numbers aren’t official until the end of the month, it appears enrollment will be up in the South East Cornerstone Public School Division for the 2018-19 school year. The preliminary numbers were updated at a recent board meeting.

There are 8,307 students enrolled in schools and programs within the South East Cornerstone Public School Division. These include the regular brick and mortar schools, as well as the virtual school program and homeschooling.

The enrollment is an increase year-over-year, with 43 more students this year than the previous year.

Director of Education for the school division, Lynn Little, explained the increases are spread across the region, with four schools, in particular, seeing significant increases above what was projected.

“The schools which saw the greatest growth were Cyberstone School, that’s our virtual school; Gordon F. Kells, the high school in Carlyle; Hillcrest School, which is an elementary K-8 school in Estevan and our homeschooling program.”

Little said the schools saw increases of roughly 12-15 above what was expected.

Schools which saw the greatest reductions from projection were Weyburn Comprehensive School, Haig School in Weyburn, Carnduff Education Complex and Yellow Grass School.

When it comes to specific grades, kindergarten numbers went up a bit, but the full grade by grade comparison won’t be done until after the official numbers are in on September 30th.
