It's been nearly a month since the Estevan Police Service has reintroduced patroling officers on mountain bikes back into the force.

"Right now we have five members on our Bike Unit. One of them went to Regina a couple weeks ago and took a three day training course, so he's all trained up through the province of Saskatchewan and through the RPS (Regina Police Service)," shared Sergeant Evan Handley.

"Basically, he'll be out and about whenever he's available, whenever we have the manpower. He'll be going all over...on the first night, he rode 43 kilometers or something like that, he told me."

The bikes add another dimension to an already multi faceted police force in Estevan.

"A bike can go in places that a regular patrol vehicle can't go, and people don't see the bikes riding. It works well in all those areas where people see police cars in the middle of the night. If they're up to no good and see the police car, they hide. On a mountain bike, he's (the officer) a little less likely to be seen, and hopefully he can stop some crimes in progress," Handley said.

"It's a great thing. The guys'll be out in the public more, they'll be able to stop and talk to people more, they're just going to be out and about being a positive influence on the community."
