With an overrepresentation in serious and fatal collision, police are rewarding teen drivers demonstrating safe driving behaviours during Teen Safety Driving Week.

"We've been part of it in different years under different slogans," explained Sgt Tyler McMillan, "and with this week with Teen Driver Safety Week, we're doing the same thing."

EPS will be handing out different items like windshield scrapers and chances to win a $250 Visa gift card.

"Some of our collisions are with teens and new drivers but it's not all of them of course."

He added that campaigns like this help to raise awareness which ultimately will bring down the number of traffic accidents among teen drivers.

"I believe it does make a difference. there's still going to be those that have that 'I don't think it will happen to me' feeling but it doesn't take very long for it to be you if your head is down and you're distracted and you're not paying attention."

"I think it does help discussing it, getting it out there."
