It was a quiet and cold New Year's Eve for the Estevan Police Service.

"Due to the weather, I think people were staying inside," explained Sgt. Evan Handley, with the Estevan Police Service. "There was a New Year's Eve party at the Legion and I saw they had cabs there, lots of rides there so that's a good thing."

"I don't recall seeing any impaireds that night which is a great thing. Hopefully people are getting the message through everything with SGI and the media so that's what we want to hear."

He added that there were a few tickets issued, one person was charged for possession under 30 grams, and one suspension for somebody that blew a warning on a roadside screening device. However, there were no impaired charges.

There was one incident that that occurred that could have ended tragically.

"We had a gentleman who one January 1st, just after midnight, went for a walk in the cold. He was located probably about half an hour to 40 minutes after he was reported missing, in a field, passed out. EMS was contacted and he was assessed and held overnight here at the Estevan Police Service."

Sgt. Handley adds that the man was not dressed appropriately for the weather.

"Luckily with cellphones now you're able to ping a cellphone to see where it was last used. Without that technology, who knows if he would have been found in time or if he would have been found at all. We're glad he was found safe."

"We hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and we look forward to working with everyone in 2018."
