Over the weekend, members of the Estevan Police Service while doing regular checks on individuals under court conditions, they found one man not abiding by the rules.

"Members attended to a residence to do a check on a male," explains Sgt. Evan Handley of the EPS. "When they were there, they located a small amount of drugs on him as well as drug paraphernalia. A small amount of cocaine was found on him as well as cash."

Augustine Thomas of Estevan was arrested and charged with breaking conditions, trafficking a controlled substance, as well as possession of counterfeit currency and having proceeds of crime.

"He was held for court and attended court this morning."

Mr Thomas was remanded into custody and will appear for a show cause hearing at Estevan Provincial Court on March 19, 2018.

Police Chief Paul Ladouceur explains the importance of these checks.

"We do them quite regularly. We go out and do follow up checks whether it be persons on condition to not consume alcohol or whether on conditions to reside in their residence or a curfew, things like that. We'll actually attend a residence to do those checks to make sure people are in compliance."

"If there are victims associated with it, we also provide the victims with the information relating to the conditions. Sometimes there are conditions where the accused can't associate or be within a certain proximity of the victim. We'll advise them so they can contact us right away by 911 if the person does come to them or is in their proximity."

"We do take them quite seriously. We do a number of checks each night to ensure compliance."

Not every check turns up something wrong. In fact, a check done recently showed all individuals were abiding by their conditions.

"Some people just don't want to play by the rules. It's unfortunate."

Sgt. Handley also added that a small amount of cocaine was also found at a local lounge recently.

"One of the cleaners called the office after she located some drugs in a bathroom. Members attended and retrieved the drugs and it will be destroyed."

"Oftentimes we'll hear that drugs will be on top of a sink or on top of a toilet at local lounges and bars."

He advises the public should they note any suspicious substance to not touch it and immediately call the police.
