Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Those five words perfectly encapsulate what Estevan experienced on Sunday afternoon as the community hosted the 'Parkinson's Superwalk' for a second straight year.

Around 45 participants strolled around the gymnasium at St. Mary's School in Estevan to help raise awareness and funds to combat Parkinson's Disease.

Through pledges and donations, $5,094 was raised by individuals locally. A slight improvement over the $4,800 raised in the inaugural Estevan Superwalk in 2016.

"I'm really excited and we had a great turnout again this year," expressed Audrey Garrioch, Co-Facilitator of the Superwalk along with Elaine Murphy. "We weren't sure how it would go the second time around, but it's been really good and it's in line with how we did last year."

"I want to thank Elaine and Jessica Lewgood, and our families for their support because it made for a really terrific walk."

Individuals showed up to walk and donate solo, but many people gathered donations as a team leading up to Sunday. 'Barrie's Buddies' were the top fundraising group, raising over half the total donations with $2,664.

Elaine Murphy, part of 'Barrie's Buddies' and the top individual fundraiser at just over $1,000 personally, was energized by the support both leading up to and including the Superwalk on Sunday.

"I am just so proud of our people in Estevan," gleefully stated Murphy afterwards. "This is so exciting, and it encourages us to think that we can do this again next year."

"Just a big thank you to everyone in Estevan who donated in any way they could."

Parkinson's Superwalks are held every September across Canada with roughly 14,000 participants nationwide. There were five walks in Saskatchewan this year including Estevan, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Regina and Saskatoon.

Kelly Pierson, the Community Development Coordinator for Southern Saskatchewan's branch of Parkinson's Canada, was on hand to experience the atmosphere at St. Mary's school on Sunday.

"We are always so very impressed with the support from smaller towns and cities including Estevan," stated Pierson. "Thank you to the donors, the sponsors, the walkers and most importantly the volunteers. Because something like this doesn't happen easily and they did an amazing job."
