MoneySense recently came out with their Best 100 Places to Live. The Energy City was ranked 93rd overall.

"I think it was great that we made the top 100," shared Mayor Roy Ludwig. "That's a positive thing, we're very pumped about that."

Estevan came in 4th in Best Places to Live in the Prairies behind Weyburn, Saskatoon, and Brandon.

"We're in good company."

However, Ludwig knows that we can't just sit on our laurels. Estevan received high marks in home affordability, health accessibility, and wealth and economy which is notable since Estevan recently went through a doctor shortage.

"I think we're doing our best considering all of the challenges that not only we face but right across the province in fact, right across Canada there are doctor shortages. We continue to deal with that the best way we can. The City is involved in helping out trying to recruit more doctors. I think Greg (Hoffart, Executive Director of the St Joesph's Hospital) is doing a pretty good job in continuing to get new doctors in play."

As for the economy, Estevan will be facing some challenges in the future with the closures of Boundary Dam Units 4 and 5 scheduled for the end of 2019. Ludwig hopes that the plans they have in play right now will allow the City to remain economically successful. Ludwig recently wrote a letter the premier, Dustin Duncan, Minister for SaskPower along with the president of SaskPower and Estevan MLA, Lori Carr.

"We'd like to get together and explore our opportunities to get a manufacturing base or other opportunities for employment for Estevan looking down the road when 4 and 5 shut down."

"We're also getting together a task force and we'll be having representatives from power, from the mine, for the workers from the mine and the workers from the power plant and we'll have the Chamber of Commerce involvement, we'll have a councillor on there, the City manager, myself, we'll also have our Economic Development Officer in there. We will continue to get together and see what we can do to improve things in the City of Estevan."
