Residents in Estevan managed to escape Thursday's storm relatively unscathed.

"(The) storm was ferocious," shared Norm Mack, City's Roads and Drainage Manage, "and within the city, we were very fortunate to miss the majority of that storm that traveled south and east of the city. The folks east of the city, a mile or two weren't so fortunate with heavy hail and high winds."

"Within our city, there was some localized flooding but it drained off pretty quick. We were lucky to avoid that."

He added that he was grateful to all the SaskPower employees who worked hard to restore power.

"We really appreciate them getting the power back as soon as they could. It was a concern for a lot of sump pumps with flooding on the homes but luckily we didn't receive a whole bunch of rain and SaskPower was very vigilant getting the power back to us."

Residents in Estevan were able to still use their water without concerns. The workers at Estevan's Water Treatment Plant worked hard to ensure there was plenty of safe water throughout the storm.

"The storm hit and we took shelter due to the tornado warning," Shane Bucsis, Water Treatment Manager. "Before that, we did shut down the plant and then the system would have run off of the reservoirs. After the storm, we lost power at the water plant throughout the city and the reservoirs. Back up power turned on at the water plant and at Wellock Reservoir and Smith Street runs off of the water tower in case of emergency."

"After that, we turned on the water plant and filled up the reservoirs because we were anticipating a long power outage to make sure everyone had water and to keep the system pressurized."

The Wellock Road reservoir went back to regular power and the pumps ran normally.

"Smith turned on I think, around 10:30 or 11 and ran fine and by 12:30 at night, we were back to regular operations."

He added that there is no issue with the safety of the water and no drinking water or boil water advisories will be issued.

"We get our water from Boundary Dam. It's such a large reservoir. It's something that we can easily treat."

"For the most part, everything worked really well. The systems and the backup systems all worked really well. The staff are well trained and know what they're doing and everyone just went into action and did what they needed to do to make sure there were no issues."
