A call you normally wouldn't expect has been coming up more and more in the police report after the last few weeks. With the drop in temperature, the Estevan Police Service has been dealing with a growing amount of false burglar alarms in local businesses. Sergeant Tyler McMillen says the cold can play a factor, but it's more likely simpler than that.

"It could be the cold, it could be a couple of other things. After a couple of businesses I've been to recently in the last week, I think it's just batteries. The homeowners and business owners are looking into changing the batteries, it must just be that time of year. But also with the extreme cold and the way the doors flex and the way the sensors line up, we really believe that some of that is due to the cold weather."

Despite the amount of false alarms, police as you can expect respond to each and every one of the alarms that do go off, including the false alarm from the east end of the city Wednesday night.

"We're glad that some of them are false and the ones that aren't, we will certainly continue to investigate and continue to catch."

As well in the police report from last night, EPS responded to a call about the wellbeing of an Estevan male who was located and found to be alright, as well as a report of a property dispute that turned out to be a matter for civil court, and finally a hit and run from Wednesday afternoon.

"There was a collision yesterday afternoon at 13th Avenue and 6th Street. No injuries reported but the one vehicle failed to stop and exchange information. At the moment, we know it's a black car that rear ended a pick up truck, we're just trying to identify that vehicle and hopefully they can come in and we can assist with exchanging information."

If you have any information relating to this or other cases the Estevan Police Service is working on, you can call the EPS at (306) 634-4767.
