The Estevan Chamber of Commerce recently handed out the Farm Family Of The Year Award at their annual ceremony, and into whose hands it was delivered, it could not have been more deserved.

The recipient was Pick Farms Limited, a multi-generational farming family from the Macoun area.

"We're very proud and very humble at the same time," expressed Donna Pick.

"My husband has been involved with farming his entire life. I became a part of it when we got married, that's a long time ago already," she noted with a chuckle.

It's a family run business. Their son has been farming with them for nearly 25 years, as well as their son-in-law, who also runs a cattle operation.

"Everything all works together, and they all help each other."

Donna shared that they have seen a lot of changes in the agriculture industry over the years.

"He reads everything he can on the new techniques and what's taking place, and they try to initiate a lot of that. He's gone from driving a small tractor with a 10 foot press drill, to a 500 horsepower tractor with a 70 foot air drill seeder equipped with satellite. They used to farm with horses when he was young, so it's some major, major changes for him."

Personally, she is very pleased about the award.

"I have a very good, hardworking family, and I'm very glad that they were recognized. I thank the community for doing that."

The Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jackie Wall says that the event is something that they love to do.

"It is a really great evening to celebrate agriculture and one special family that has contributed so much to their local community."

She revealed what made the Pick's stand out among all the other nominees.

"It's always a very tough decision, as there are plenty of great applications that are put forward. Part of it was the fact that they are a multi-generational farm, and are always forward thinking. They not only contribute to agriculture, but to their community as well in a lot of different roles."

Wall also related the family's reaction to being named.

"They were fantastic. They had all their family there, I believe, all the way down to little guy, who is just a few months old and barely walking. You could just see the pride and love between them, and they came across as a very strong, supportive, close knit group."

In addition, several special guests were involved in the night. These included Trevor Gowen returning as the emcee, and Leona Dargis talking about her experiences in agriculture, including travelling around the world learning various different farming practices. 4H club members also gave presentations on various topics.

In conclusion, Wall expressed the Estevan Chamber of Commerce's thanks to the local agriculture community for their support of the occasion.
