School is back in session and harvest continues to forge ahead here in September. The Government of Saskatchewan’s weekly Crop Report was issued and it continues to show great numbers.

The dry weather allowed for another productive week of harvest in southeast Saskatchewan. Producers in the region now have 56 percent of crops harvested, a jump up of 14 percent. An additional 25 percent of the crop is swathed or ready for straight-cut.

39 percent of all crops in Saskatchewan are now in the bin. That includes 97 percent of the fall rye and 92 percent of the winter wheat. Large chunks of the field peas and lentils have been harvested, at 86 and 83 percent, respectively.

This year’s harvest is well ahead of the five-year average, which sits at 35 percent. However, at this time last year farmers had 45 percent done.

Roughly half of the durum, barley and mustard is done. Meanwhile, harvest has just begun on the flax, canary seed, soybeans and oats in most parts of the province.

The forecast is calling for some rain in the next few days, which could slow down the harvest efforts for a bit. Sunshine is supposed to return next week again to help farmers get back into the fields.
