The smell of smoke was on the air in Estevan this afternoon as a fire raged in a field to the northeast of the city, less than a mile from the Estevan airport. Swathes in a field caught fire and brought out the Estevan Fire Department in force.

Farmers from the surrounding area also pitched in to help control the spread of the fire and prevent it from getting out of control. Winds blew smoke and some of the flames southwest, but the farmers helped break up the land and turn dirt to stop it.

According to one farmer who was on the scene, no one was injured in the fire. A nearby building was in the path of the fire, but a Discover Estevan reporter on the scene did not see any damage to the structure.

The worst of the fire was extinguished by about 2:30, though smoke continued to blow into town.

Discover Estevan will have further details on this story as they become available.
