Crews have finished flaring off the dangerous ammonia which was accidentally added to propane tanks 6 miles north of Estevan on Friday morning.

"Ammonia is a dangerous substance so it was definitely a safety concern there," explained Cam Zimmer, Communications Manager with Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL). "So that's why some of the measures that were taken took place. The flaring that was used, that's the safest way of disposing of the gas. It burns off anything that is in the tank."

FCL worked with their propane teams as well as an emergency response team of consultants.

"They worked with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, RCMP, Estevan Police, Estevan Fire Department, the RM of Estevan just to make sure all those groups were informed and that we were doing it as safely as possible."

"There was fire truck from Estevan Fire Department on site just to make sure because there was fire involved obviously. It is was safely conducted and resolved and that all worked out."

He added that the situation was contained and there was no damage to surrounding land.

"Our tanks that had the ammonia deposited will need some repair now that the safety issue is resolved. They'll have to go back and repair those but there was no effect on customers. They're still working with a response crew to do a little bit more clean up of the tanks this week and expect once that happens and the repairs are made that propane deliveries can start again."

Flaring began on Friday morning was completed on Monday around noon. He also acknowledged that support form the different resources.

"Thanks to all of the different groups, Estevan Fire, and Police and the City of Estevan for all the assistance on resolving this safely and we're glad that we were able to do it safely and bring our business back to normal in Estevan."
