Flu season is right around the corner, and the Saskatchewan Health Authority is encouraging residents to get vaccinated early.

Starting October 22, the free flu vaccine will be available through public health clinics in Saskatchewan, as well as in some physician and nurse practitioner offices.

The flu vaccine is a safe, effective way to help people stay healthy, prevent illness and save lives.

Getting vaccinated is especially important for people at a high risk of complications and their caregivers. Medical Health Officer Dr. Lanre Medu says the flu vaccine is “beneficial” when “...we’re talking about people who have underlying health conditions...pregnant women, seniors – particularly over age 65, and young children.”

Anyone six months of age and older can receive the flu vaccine. In order to receive the immunization, residents will need to take their Saskatchewan health card with them.

According to Dr. Medu, flu season runs from sometime in October through to May, so “...there is no closing date to receive the [publicly funded] flu vaccine.”
