Residents of the Energy City woke up to a heavy blanket of fog, and a related advisory, early this morning. While it made driving conditions difficult at the beginning of the day, it has gradually eased as the morning progressed.

It will be dissipating slowly over the next 24 hours, according to Environment Canada Regional Meteorologist Mark Melsness.

"You can expect fog to be in the area most of the day and throughout the night tonight. However, the worst of it should be over."

Melsness also explained what caused the sudden phenomenon.

"You have a deep snow cover from all the storms that have gone through there, so that allows the temperatures near the ground to cool off quite a bit. There is also a lot of warm air just above the surface, and that creates ideal conditions for fog formation."

He said that the winds are shifting, and as a result, he expects the advisory to be lifted sometime today.

He also cautioned motorists to slow down when driving in foggy conditions, and if they need to pull over, to make sure they are well on the side of the road to avoid getting hit by other traffic.
