The Ministry of Education of the Government of Saskatchewan recently appointed the position of Assistant Deputy Minister to a former teacher from the southeast.

Susan Nedelcov-Anderson's teaching career took her to Griffin, Goodwater, Halbrite and Weyburn's Queen Elizabeth School. At QE, she also had Administrative responsibilities.
She became the Curriculum Coordinator for South East Cornerstone Public School Division before landing a position with the Ministry of Education.

"The role of Assistant Deputy Minister is to support both the Minister of Education and the Ministry of Education as part of a leadership team," explained Nedelcov-Anderson.

"Four and a half years ago I accepted the position of Director of Curriculum here at the Ministry of Education. My responsibility as Director of Curriculum was to work with the consultants here and with teachers out in the field in terms of writing curriculum for the province."

When Nedelcov-Anderson started as a teacher, she thought she was going to teach for thirty years. It was a surprise to her that she would move into a different position.

"I didn't approach teaching thinking I was going to do this for a few years and then move into a leadership role."

"It was a Director at the time who approached me to think about moving into the curriculum coordinator role with the school division," said Nedelcov-Anderson and went on to say there were aspects of her skill set that suited to the Coordinator position.

Nedelcov-Anderson talked about what the Ministry of Education is working on.

"One of the really exciting this is we are working on an Education Sector Strategic Plan. A five-year plan, the exciting part about this plan is the fact we have all 28 School Division Directors of Education sitting around the table as well as our first nations education authorities and the Ministry of Education."

They are looking at ways to work together to improve opportunities for Saskatchewan Students.

"That plan identified some challenges. We want to make sure that as children enter school, they are ready to learn, while they are at School that they are engaged in their learning and that they are graduating and ready for what their world will be."
