Habitat for Humanity has been operating in the community since 2016 with the goal of bringing communities together to help families build strength, stability, and independence through homeownership. The nonprofit organization has been holding a variety of fundraisers in the community and according to Doug Barnstable who is one of the three chairmen with the habitat, Estevan has been more than willing to step up.

"It started out in 2016 when we first organized in February, shortly thereafter we started the fundraising process, our goal was to try and construct the first home in 2017. We worked through all of 2016 and in the fall of 16  we initiated the process of choosing the partner family and that was a whole new experience as well. That whole progress began in June with a meeting in the city, applications were distributed in that meeting. From that, we had a single applicant that we proposed to Regina who is our affiliate with habitat. They selected that family as our partner family in October of 2016. From there on we kept up the process of fundraising."

When it comes to habitat building homes it relies heavily on donations from the community, and over the past few years they have been busy putting on fundraiser after fundraiser, and time and time again Estevan steps up to the plate. Barnstable.

"We've had various fundraisers,  we had a cash calendar fundraiser that we have done twice and we're going to do it a third time in March, April, May. We also had a couple of poker tournaments, with our third one happening on March 9th. The fundraisers from the poker side, there have been typically 60 to 70 people coming to that. so all our fundraising efforts have been really well received."

For people who would like the chance to become a habitat family, they will be holding a meeting on March 23rd at the Days Inn, at that meeting they will hand out all the information on becoming a Habitat family. One thing about these projects that people might not know is that a portion of the funds raised from each house they build is put in a fund that goes toward building a house in a developing country, so when you help Habitat for Humanity your not just helping out one deserving family in our community you're helping people across the world.
