Victoria Day is the unofficial start to the gardening season. And if you do not have a green thumb, there is help out there.

"Just knowing what kind of seeds are best to grow and at what time and the season to do it," advises Stephanie Davis - Programs Coordinator with Southeast Newcomer's Services. "And also, of course weeding and watering are all important as well."

She adds that Estevan has a community garden if you do not have the room to grow your own garden.

"It's really a great little garden area, it's over on Lynd Crescent. It's raised garden beds. Basically it's just a small, little plot and you can plant seeds and it's open to anyone just contact the Estevan Community Gardens to purchase one of them."

"You can grow your vegetable or flowers that you would like to grow."

Estevan is in the 3B zone when it comes to planting. Knowing which plants grow best in what zones is also a good things to know.

"Lettuce and spinach and tomatoes grow pretty well," she adds. "A lot of the green vegetables are best to grow."

Davis adds that gardening is a great activity in general and produces some great results.

"I think it's just a really good opportunity for families to get out especially with their kids and spend some quality time gardening and learning about vegetables in general. And the hard work of creating something, growing it from a seed and then reaping the rewards when it's all done and you can have a nice meal or vegetable. If you're growing organic, with no pesticides, that's an additional benefit for yourself and your family."
