The warm conditions have created unstable conditions on the ice this winter. Therefore, the Estevan Fire Department is cautioning those who are venturing outdoors.

"We've had a few phone calls," explained Fire Chief Dale Feser, "and we have shared some information on our Facebook page and that's in relation to going out and wandering out on ice."

"You always want to make sure that you're checking with the Water Security Agency, or your local authorities to ensure that it is safe for one to go out there. When you're taking a look at the guidelines, if you're just walking on the ice, you want to have a minimum of four inches of thickness or ten centimeters."

"Should you go out there with a snowmobile or an ATV, eight inches or 20 centimeters of thickness. For automobiles two tonnes or less, you want to have at least a foot or 30 centimeters of thickness and then for any of the larger trucks, you want to have twelve inches plus or greater than 30 centimeters before you wander out there."

"There's definitely been some areas throughout the province where fire departments have had to come out and do some water rescue with either people or animals or vehicles falling through the ice."
