Impaired boating is responsible for nearly sixty percent of all boating deaths in Saskatchewan every year. That's the second highest statistic in the country.

This August long weekend, the Canadian Safe Boating Council is reminding everyone to not drink alcohol while on the water. It's not only dangerous, it's also illegal.

"If you boat impaired and are convicted of boating impaired, in many provinces in Canada, you will lose your drivers license for your car for up to a year," explained Ian Gilson, director of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. "So, it's a really significant penalty."

Human-powered craft, such as canoes and kayaks, are included in the legislation under the definition of a vessel and are subject to the same penalties.
