With the windchill going almost below minus 30 overnight, Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for the Estevan area. While it has been lifted, for the time being, the chances are pretty good it’ll be back on tonight.

Meteorologist Terri Lang says it's typical of winter in Saskatchewan, and we are nowhere near the record lows.

“The windchill is certainly high, which is why we had that extreme cold warning out, but I just don't think we're accustomed to it because it has been such a mild winter,” she explained. “So this area of arctic high pressure has moved down over the province, and that combined with some of the lighter winds, that's what's giving the higher windchills.”

Lang said temperatures are expected to slowly moderate soon.

“We are expecting temperatures to slowly moderate over the next couple of days to more seasonal values, seasonal for this time of year, highs around minus 9, lows around minus 20, and of course, those are 30 year averages, so moderating, thankfully, over the next couple of days,” she said.

Lang said, however, some of the nastiest aspects of winter could hit us throughout the weekend.

“We are keeping an eye on a major weather system that is expected to move through the province on Saturday into Sunday,” she cautioned. “This is the real winter stuff, so some snow coming with that, a risk of freezing rain even on Sunday, lots of wind with that, so people should expect some difficult driving conditions in the province on the weekend.”

Drive with care, or better yet, stay home if you can avoid travelling this weekend.
