A heat wave is coming to southeast Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada is calling for temperatures to get above 30° starting Friday, with the heat continuing for a few days after, well into next week. It will be the first prolonged period of heat Estevan has seen so far this summer.

Terri Laing is a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada. She explained the heat, expected to last for a few days, will more than likely result in heat warning being issued for the region. In southern Saskatchewan, a heat warning is issued when the daytime high is above 32° for two consecutive days, and the overnight low remains above 16°.

“The reason those were put in place is because the health studies found people could handle a day of heat with no problem, but it was the extended period when they couldn’t recover overnight, when the temperatures didn’t dip low enough, that’s when the effects started to build up,” Laing said.

Laing recommends avoiding activities when the day is at it’s hottest, instead, getting things done in the early morning, or in the evening, as temperatures start to cool off. As well, remain hydrated, and wear sunscreen.

“If you don’t have air conditioning, seek out places where you can find cooler spots,” Laing stated. These would include a shopping centre or library.
