As each day passes in July, Estevan and the surrounding area continues to go through a dry spell. Other destinations across south Saskatchewan have seen even less rain than the Estevan area and according to Environment Canada, it looks like that trend could continue.

So just how dry has it been?

The average precipitation in May is 52.1 mm, while Estevan actually saw 42.2 mm. In June, Estevan saw 49.4 mm which was below the average of 74.8 mm.

So far in July, the reading at the Estevan airport has rainfall totals at 19.2 mm. That total is significantly below normal for the month of July as the average precipitation in Estevan can be expected around 67.5 mm.

It also should be noted that of the 19.2 mm of rain that has fallen so far, every drop of that total fell on one day. That one day of rainfall happened to be during a thunderstorm, where parts of the city saw little to no rain during that dousing.

"You have to use lots of station data, as much as you can to try and form an idea of what the rainfall is like in a certain area," said Environment Canada's Regional Meteorologist John Paul Cragg. "One station could be pretty misleading. When thunderstorms move around and it only goes over a station at the airport, its going to make it seem like that fell everywhere, but it may have just fell in one small location due to the thunderstorm."

"Looking at the map you obviously see that its been really dry across southern Saskatchewan in comparison to average precipitation throughout that time. Although Estevan has been quite dry, its been much drier in other areas. Regina has only seen 0.2 mm of rain while Weyburn has only seen 2.9 mm."

As of now, there is so significant sign that Estevan and the surrounding area will see a major rainfall.
