With all the recent snow we've received, it's good to remember to shovel around any fire hydrants while shovelling the sidewalks.

"Typically what you want to do is make sure the snow is cleared out around a 3-foot radius around all the fire hydrants," explained Fire Chief Dale Feser. "This will allow fire crews to get in there and establish a water supply very quickly with seconds to count. Otherwise, if this isn't done and maintained, the firefighters will have to shovel that 3-foot radius from around the hydrant while that emergency is occurring, It'll add some additional time to establishing a safe fire hydrant operation for the firefighters."

It's is also a great idea to make sure all outdoor vents on your house are clear of snow and ice to ensure that the gasses that are to escape your house, such as carbon monoxide, are able to do so safely. Estevan Fire and rescue also want to remind the public to call 911 if their carbon monoxide detector goes off even if you suspect the detector is faulty. If there is a risk of carbon monoxide, Estevan Fire and Rescue can test for it and get Sask Energy to pinpoint where it's coming from. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
