The May long weekend appears to be the perfect time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, or to grill some food with family and friends.

However, this time of year also means that you can expect some uninvited guests to join in on the party as well, namely mosquitoes.

Everyone wishes that the first pair of the insects had been swatted at the beginning, but since that didn't happen, City of Estevan Parks Manager Rod March revealed ways that war can be waged against them.

"The biggest thing is eliminating the habitat. We use larvicide, which only affects the larvae, to control it."

The mosquitoes that are out there right now, the most ferocious ones, are the Aedes Dorsalis and can fly up to 20 kilometers. Even though we do the best that we can in eliminating the eggs or the source of anything being born within the city and 2 kilometers around, they'll move in," he explained, adding that fogging is not an option due to it's price-tag and it's short time-span of effectiveness.

"In terms of citizens, you can check your backyard for any potential water sources such as wheel barrows, eaves-troughs with leaves left in them and bird baths. Anywhere where water will hold up is where mosquitoes will breed, and they do so quickly," March advised.

"If you can eliminate the sources of the habitat, you can really reduce the number of the insects that are in the city."
