With temperatures above zero for a large chunk of the year so far, the ice at the Kinsmen outdoor rink could've taken an absolute beating if people weren't careful. As a near-perfect weekend for outdoor skating approaches, however, the rink is still in top shape thanks to a little cooperation from skaters and a little help from the city.

"I went out there yesterday, the warm weather is not doing too much to it," said Kinsmen President Preston Majeran. "The city is going to come out and help us out, we're going to run a Zamboni on it sometime this week."

With the weekend temperatures expected to be just below zero during the day and right around minus ten at night, it should be a nearly perfect few days for outdoor skating. Majeran expects the ice to be in perfect condition for it as well.

"The ice held up really nicely with the warm weather," he said. "Now all we've got to do is hope that it turns cold and hope we get a little bit more snow."

According to Majeran, the one weekend things got really warm the rink got a bit too much use and they had to temporarily shut it down. Since then, however, skaters have been more careful about not skating when the temperature gets too high.

"People were very understanding," he said. "Now that the temperature is a bit warmer, people are helping by cleaning off the ice and just taking care of it."

The nets are still on the outdoor rink so people can still shoot pucks, but for those who want to skate without pucks (or worrying about being hit by them), there is a second ice surface now for recreational skating. So far, that surface has proved to be a hit.

"That small rink has been getting a lot of use, it's really nice," Majeran said. "Families can take the young ones out there to skate and there's a lot of puck activity on the other ice. I've actually been by there myself when nobody was on the big rink and they were on the small one... it looks like that one will be a success and we might be proceeding with it more in the future."

As of this writing, Saturday's forecast is for sunshine and a high of around minus four.
