The federal budget will be released in the coming weeks, but Souri-Moose Mountain MP Dr. Robert Kitchen isn’t holding his breath.

Kitchen stated Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the Liberal government, have yet to keep a key promise from the 2015 election campaign when it comes to the country's finances.

“He promised only a small, $10 billion deficit for a year, maybe two,” Kitchen highlighted. “Well, guess what? It was 30 billion the first year; it was 28 billion the second year, it’s 20 billion the third year.”

Kitchen is doubtful the budget will be balanced in the near future, citing comments from the Parliamentary Budgetary Office which says, based on the current projections, the budget won’t be balanced until 2045.

Part of the problem, from Kitchen’s point of view, is what he sees as the reliance on spending decisions being made by the government based on social media posts and hashtags.

“‘Well, I’m going to give $50 million here, or money over here,’ Out of the blue, he comes up with this,” said Kitchen. “It’s going to cost us, it’s going cost our children, it’s going to cost our grandchildren, it’s going to cost our great-grandchildren.”

The federal government is currently accepting public feedback on what items they would like to see included in the 2019-2020 federal budget.
