The local chapter of MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving has had a slow start to the year so far but according to the MADD community leader Connie Hagel, they have a lot lined up.

"This year we haven't done much to begin with but we did receive a grant so we can do a town hall meeting, I want to do that this spring to talk to people about RIDD and what that is. We also have a couple police check stops that were going to be involved in, one is this weekend and one is in a couple more weeks. So we're going to get our volunteers out, I'm really happy to say we have 12 volunteers now with MADD so I have got a lot of ladies that have stepped up and want to do that for MADD Canada so that's great to see we're getting a lot of community support."

MADD in the community helps support local law enforcement by holding information sessions and chats with the community about the dangers of impaired driving. MADD Volunteers also attend check stops in the community According to Hagel.

"What we do is the police have random check stops throughout the city and when they clear the vehicle, we just go up to them and say thank you for driving sober and we give them a giveaway and on their way they go. It lets the public know we're still out there."

The local chapter of MADD will be attending check stops throughout Estevan this weekend.
