National Fire Prevention week has started and runs till October 13. This year's theme is look, listen and learn; be aware, fire can happen anywhere. The Estevan Fire Department has plans to help people understand more about fire safety and fire prevention.

Fire Cheif Dale Feser explains, "We really want to focus on this particular theme; look, listen and learn. Look for places fire can start, listen for the sound of the smoke alarm, know what to do when that sound goes off and of course you need to make sure you learn two ways out of each room or building that you may be in at that time of an emergency, should it occur. Your secondary means of egress or exit from a building is usually looked at after your primary means of entry or exit from the building is blocked off. That is usually when you start looking at another alternate means like a window or alternate door to escape any room you may be in."

"Tonight we are going to be out in certain areas of the city canvassing, going door to door with our smoke detector campaign. There will be fire trucks out with firefighters dressed in uniform, we will be knocking on doors asking to be allowed entry into homes to see if there are working fire alarms. If the smoke alarm is not working due to a dead battery, we will replace the battery. If there is no smoke alarm, we will replace the smoke alarm as well as if it's not functioning at all or over 10 years of age we will replace it. I would like to add that this is all free of charge due to fundraising through the Fire Fighters Association initiatives throughout the years. We'll be happy to see everybody out there and look forward to interacting with everybody."

"Wednesday night we will be partaking in the Estevan Bruins Emergency Services Appreciation Night, so you'll see all members of emergency services there. We really look forward to partaking in the event, as it was excellent last year. Each member of the emergency services will have a table set up in the foyer to show a little more about what the organization is about. We will have fire prevention materials to hand out for that particular night."

Thursday night The Estevan Fire Department will continue going door to door with their door to door smoke detector campaign.

Feser adds, "We just want to make sure everyone is aware that although National Fire Prevention Week is only once a year, we want to strongly reinforce the fact that fire prevention isn't just one week a year, it's 365 days, 24/7. If anyone has any or concerns, he or she is more than welcomed to call the Estevan Fire Station @ 306-634-1850 and we will be happy to help them out with any general inquiries and public education materials."
