During Question Period on Monday at the Saskatchewan Legislature, NDP Health Critic Vicki Mowat brought up the issue of ambulance fees in the province.

Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada that charges patients if they need to be transferred from one health facility to another. The basic Ambulance Service Fee is a minimum $245 that all patients are charged, and that's not including the $2.30 per kilometre mileage fee. A trip from Yorkton Hospital to Saskatoon would cost close to $2249.00.

Health Minister Jim Reiter responded by saying ambulance fees are regularly brought up during budget talks, and that officials have told him 87% of ambulance fees are covered by some level of government, and that if someone does receive a large bill, they will arrange for term payments with the patient.
